Keeping up with and affording home maintenance and repairs can be a challenge and get really expensive really fast, but several non-profits in the Grand Rapids Metro area are working tirelessly to provide opportunities for low to moderate income families. In this post, we highlight three organizations offering assistance to those who need it when it comes to crucial home repairs.

If you’re looking for assistance in maintaining your home, our office is here to help you navigate these opportunities.

#1 The City of Grand Rapids Housing Rehabilitation Program

The Housing Rehabilitation Program offers affordable loans for home repairs within the Grand Rapids City limits.

Assistance to qualified homeowners includes:
  • Help determining what repairs are needed
  • Help selecting a contractor and getting a fair price
  • Help to ensure the repairs are complete and of good quality

#2 Senior Neighbors Home Maintenance and Minor Repair Services

This program by Senior Neighbors assists seniors who do not have the ability or resources to complete MINOR home repairs. Possible assistance includes: minor plumbing and electrical problems, replacing door locks, installing smoke detectors, installing screens and storm windows, etc. Also, a limited number of eligible seniors can receive lawn mowing and snow removal.

#3 Veteran Home Repair Services through Senior Neighbors

Another Senior Neighbors program that provides home repairs to veterans and their spouses in the community at no cost to them. The grant-funded program covers a wide range of projects that improve the livability of the home. Tasks that address safety and accessibility are given priority. Examples of past projects include: walk-in shower installation, deck repair, electrical outlet repair, and floor replacement.

#4 Home Repair Services of Kent County

Home Repair Services of Kent County is a local non-profit looking to provide post-purchase housing support to those who need it. Their services include repair assistance, classes for new homeowners, maintenance and check-up inspections, and more.

They specifically offer a major and minor repair program that focuses on critical health and safety repairs, including furnace repair & replacement, plumbing issues, roof repairs, and water heater repair & replacement.
