Most of our family is still on the East Side or out of State so we are constantly talking about why we’ve stayed in West Michigan after moving here for a job that’s now ended in 2008. Honestly, we could talk for hours. But if we had to narrow it down, here are the five reasons that keep showing up at the top of our list.
1. Water, Water Everywhere
West Michigan is so spoiled when it comes to water, and once you've lived here, everywhere else feels a little dry by comparison. There's obviously the big lake, Lake Michigan,or floating down the Muskegon River on a hot afternoon with a cooler tied to your tube. You could enjoy an evening walk through Riverside Park along the Grand River, and it’s close enough to downtown Grand Rapids that you can grab dinner right after. Really, whatever kind of water you’re searching for; lake, river, or somewhere in between, it's never far away.
2. Loads of Hikes
If you'd rather have dirt under your hiking boots than sand between your toes, West Michigan delivers there too. Dragon Trail winds through terrain that feels like it was designed for adventure. The Reeds Lake Loop gives you a scenic, walkable stretch right in the middle of East Grand Rapids. Aman Park offers dense woods and a real sense of getting away from it all, just minutes from the city. And that's before you get into the dozens of smaller trail systems tucked into nearly every community out here. Wherever you live in West Michigan, a good trail is rarely more than a short drive away.
3. The People
You guys. Seriously. The people here are so nice, it takes some transplants years to stop being suspicious of it. "West Michigan Nice" is a real thing, not just a phrase on a coffee mug. It's the neighbor who shovels your driveway without being asked, the stranger who stops to help when your car won't start, the small talk in line at the grocery store that actually feels genuine. It's the kind of place where people still wave.
4. Community
West Michigan isn't one place, it's a mosaic of distinct communities, each with its own personality. Drive to a different neighborhood commercial corridor and it suddenly feels like a completely different town. Catch a cultural festival in one city and a farmers market in the next, and you'll feel like you took a day trip just by crossing a city line. Then there are the cafes, the independent bookstores, the little boutiques that make each downtown worth wandering through slowly. And the Lakeshore deserves its own mention here, sandy beaches and small-town charm without a hint of saltwater.
5. Housing That's Still Affordable
Compared to the national average, West Michigan housing is still relatively affordable, and you don't have to sacrifice location to get it. Even in the more rural communities, you're usually 25 minutes or less from Grand Rapids, so you get the peace and space of small-town living without giving up easy access to the city.
Water, trails, genuinely kind people, distinct little communities, and housing that doesn't require a small fortune.
That's West Michigan, and that's why we love calling it home.
